RANDB RADIO STATION WAVE 89.1 HAS NOW SIGNED OFF

(SPOT.ph) In this era of digital streaming, it’s become increasingly common to see radio stations cease operations—but that doesn’t make it any less painful for those who grew up tuning in. Remember Wave 89.1 compilations like Dreamsounds and Quiet Storm, where we were gifted with the best of urban music? Think tracks like "Officially Missing You" by Tamia, "Say It" by Voices of Theory, and "Stick Around" by Azure, and more.

Well, it’s time to say goodbye: Wave 89.1 officially signed off on April 14. They didn't explain why—just that the end is here.

"We’ve been receiving many stories on how Wave touched your lives, and how you’ve grown up with us," Wave 89.1 wrote in a statement. "We changed the game. No one can say otherwise. Thanks to all the former djs, managers, directors, techs, guests and anyone who has ever set foot in our studio. You helped us make history."

Saying goodbye to Wave 89.1

Wave 89.1 prided itself in being Metro Manila’s source of R&B, hip-hop, and contemporary music, with hit programs like Wave Back Wednesday, Feel Good Friday, and Sunday Slowdown that have made the daily grind so much more bearable at home, in the car, or at work.

The station has been influential in promoting urban music in the Philippines since it rebranded to Wave 89.1 in 2001. It's known for featuring various DJs who contribute to its unique sound, including guest mixes, interviews with artists, and live sets.

"This station solidified my love for hip-hop and R&B during my late teens when Spotify, YouTube and even music on mobile phones still weren't a thing. Y'all indeed a game changer on PH FM. Wave 89.1, it's been good!" one user commented.

"Been listening to Wave 89.1 since college, my drive from Tandang Sora to Morayta was made pleasant listening to Kai, Droppin Harmony, Paolo Santos, etc. Thank you Wave 89.1," another user commented.

What happens to the 89.1 frequency?

Moving forward, Adventist Media will be taking over the 89.1MHz frequency to broadcast religious content.

The good news is that you can still listen to curated compilations like Dreamsound and Quiet Storm via Spotify playlists! Some are officially created by Wave 89.1 (like the Sunday Slowdown playlist below) but we're sure many listeners of that time remember the songs well enough to make nostalgic playlists of their own.

This isn’t the first time a well-loved radio station signed off in recent years. Whether it was because of financial constraints, regulatory issues, or strategic business decisions to refocus on digital media ventures, radio has been one of the most hard-hit industries in the 21st Century.

There was also NU 107, what was once considered the home of new rock in the Philippines. NU 107 ceased operations in November 2010 to become 107.5 Win Radio, then later, Wish 107.5. Its traditional radio operations would also end in late 2020 to focus on digital through the Wish Bus performances on YouTube.

We've got our fingers crossed that the rest of our station favorites remain on air for as long as they can.
